He enrolled at the "Hochschule für Musik 'Hanns Eisler'" in Berlin at the age of 16. He completed his studies with Prof. Heinz Schmunk in 1984, earning a soloist' diploma. After his studies, he became concertmaster of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin). Gernot Süßmuth is a frequently requested chamber music partner. He performed with the Petersen Quartet from 1983-2000, concertizing with the quartet regularly in all of Europe's great musical centers, as well as America, Asia and Australia. Many CDs were made by the quartet, one even receiving an outstanding achievement prize. Gernot Sußmuth has appeared as soloist and concertized with reknown chamber music partners. Since 1993, he has also taught at the "Hochschule für Musik 'Hanns Eisler '" in Berlin. In the past years, he has directed different projects with the "European Community Orchestra".
