Miao Huang

Press | Repertoire

Biography

Miao Huang, a young German pianist with Chinese roots, is one of the most promising German pianists of her generation. During the last season, she played more than 50 concerts, including her debut with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto, as well as a sold-out recital at the Shanghai Concert Hall.

Already at an early age she had been awarded several prizes at international piano competitions before winning First Prize at the Newport International Competition for Young Pianists at the age of 19. Since then she has received numerous prizes at renowned international piano competitions, e.g. Hong Kong International Piano Competition, International Piano Competition Premio Jaén, International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz and International Piano Competition Alessandro Casagrande, among others. Recently, she has been awarded the Mozart Prize at the 2013 Cleveland International Piano Competition and the 2nd Prize at the 2014 Hilton Head International Piano Competition. Moreover, she received the coveted First Prize as well as the Special Prize of the Marie-Luise Imbusch Foundation for her outstanding performances at the German Music Competition 2011, being the first female pianist in the history of the competition to earn this distinction in the piano category. She has been a scholarship holder of the Gotthard-Schierse Foundation and the Zukunftsinitiative Rheinland-Pfalz.

Miao has appeared as soloist with a wide range of acclaimed orchestras such as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Orquesta de Córdoba, the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, the Chisinau National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Polish Chamber Symphonic, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, the Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen or the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, collaborating with conductors including Christopher Warren-Green, Marcus Bosch or Eiji Oue.

Miao Huang has played in important concert halls such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Liederhalle Stuttgart, the NDR Hannover, the Kiev Philharmonic, the Lviv Philharmonic, and the Hong Kong City Hall, and has appeared at festivals like the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival or the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele. Further engagements have taken her to China, the United Kingdom, Austria, Moldavia, Ukraine and South America. Besides her solo career, she devotes herself to chamber music, and has performed with artists like the Endellion String Quartet or Fabio Bidini.

Miao Huang has studied with distinguished pianists and teachers such as Prof. Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy, Prof. Fabio Bidini and Prof. Bernd Goetzke at Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. Moreover, she participated in master classes given by Peter Feuchtwanger, Michael Ponti, Arie Vardi, Matti Raekallio and Cécile Ousset.

She has been featured in recordings with German broadcasters such as Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Südwestrundfunk, Saarländischer Rundfunk, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur, as well as Shanghai East Radio. Her debut recording with works by Frédéric Chopin and Maurice Ravel has been recently released by the German label GENUIN, in a co-production with Deutscher Musikrat and Deutschlandradio Kultur, and received excellent reviews ("this is world-class piano playing by any standard, and superbly recorded too" - Classics Today).

Miao also holds a master's degree in business mathematics.
