GUO WENJING

Guo Wenjing was born in Sichuan, a mountainous province in southern China. In 1983 Guo graduated in composition from the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music. Residing in Beijing, Guo is a member of the Chinese Musicians? Association, and professor in the composition department of the Central Conservatory of Music. His prolific output includes two operas, a choral symphony, four concertos, two symphonic poems, chamber music, and scores for 20 films and 25 television films. Some pieces combine Chinese traditional ensembles with Western orchestras.

Since 1985, Guo has received many awards for his music in China. He is also well known beyond the borders of his homeland. Guo's pieces have been performed at festivals in Amsterdam, Berlin, Glasgow, Paris, Edinburgh, New York, London, Turin, Perth, Huddersfield, Hong Kong and Warsaw, and played by distinguished ensembles, including the Nieuw Ensemble of Amsterdam, London Sinfonietta, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New Juilliard Ensemble, Cincinnati Percussion Group, the Kronos Quartet, Arditti String Quartet, Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, BBC Scottish, Goteborg(Sweden),China National and China Philharmonic Symphony orchestras. In 1996 Guo was invited to the United States as a visiting scholar by the Asian Cultural Council, an affiliate of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. He has also lectured at the Swedish Royal Institute of Music, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.
