Guest Professor Violoncello

Prof. Catalin Ilea,

Catalin Ilea is professor for violoncello at Berlin´s prestigious “Universität der Künste”. He was born 1940 in Rumania and studied cello with Georg Jarosevici,, a disciple of both Julius Klengel and Dimitrie D. Dinicu, a former student of Diran Alexanian. After finishing his studies at the Bucharest Academy of Music as head of his class, Catalin Ilea became cello-principal of the Philharmonic Orchestra “George Enescu” in Bucharest. His career as a soloist started with four international first prizes, followed by the musical critics “Distinction for outstanding performances” in the years 1992 and 2001. In 1977, Germany has become his new home. He is teaching master-classes in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Poland etc. on regular basis. He was a long-time member of the ensemble “Musica Nova”, the “Trio Bucharest” (together with Stefan and Valentin Gheorghiu) as well as of the “Sharon-Quartett”. As a soloist, Catalin Ilea showed already in young years a very broad repertoire that included all directions of style known in the cello-literature and has grown to be one of the richest in his field. He is a regular guest of all important scenes in Europe, North America and Asia, where his performances are known for their “bewildering sensibility”, authority and lightness”. Pierre Fournier wrote about him: “It is a great pleasure to express my admiration for the great talent of this outstanding musician.” Catalin Ilea has remained faithful to his style while constantly varying it throughout the years. Each of his concerts is different from the preceding one. Time and again he looks things from different points of view, thereby forcing his listeners to change their conceptions on music along with him. Ilea`s concerts are always a surprise, calling on people to use their imagination. More than 20CD`s and records prove his intense preoccupation with both the cell-literature and chamber-music, among them J. S. Bach`s solo suiten and gamba sonatas, the cello sonatas from Brahms, Franck and enescu, the cello concertons by d´Albert, Schumann, Wilhelm Berger, Bottesini and Offenbach as well as Enescu´s “Symphonie Concertante” .
